Is there going to be a conflict here with NHS facilities which sign up to provide gender services post Tavistock closure if they have signed up to GLAAD?
I think so, if GLADD feel emboldened enough to ‘hold [medical schools] to account’ re what they have signed. I have seen one of the GLADD charter authors do this before - Dr Joseph Hartland, the same doctor who couldn’t stand to be questioned by the Royal College of Psychiatrists not long ago.
Dr Hartland tagged the BMA to tell them that one of their BMA Rep junior doctors was not upholding the values that the BMA signed up to in the GLADD Charter. This was because the junior doctor has said ‘A denial of non-binary identities doesn’t make you a bigot’. It seems that Dr Hartland wanted that doctor removed from their role due to that and tried to use the BMA’s signing of the GLADD Charter as a reason why they should. I don’t know if the doctor remains as a BMA Rep or not, as they have now deleted their Twitter.
Looks like he ducked out of actually being a medical doctor pretty quickly:
Joseph Hartland
Senior Lecturer in Medical Education, Deputy Education Director for Student Equality, Diversity and Inclusion, 3D (Disability, Disadvantage and Diversity) Helical Theme Lead, Bristol Medical School
Dr Joseph Hartland (they/them) left clinical medicine in 2018 and is now a full-time Senior Lecturer at the University of Bristol Medical School, where they currently hold the role of Deputy Education Director for Student Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI). Additionally, they lead on the inclusion of marginalised voices in undergraduate teaching, inclusive educational culture change, and sit on the Executive Board for the Medical Schools Council EDI Alliance. Outside of academic work they are a queer activist, and the lead author on the GLADD UK Medical School Charter on So-Called LGBTQ+ Conversion Therapy.
No, it’s a UK charter. I believe that different states in the US have different medical policies.
A good person to follow on Twitter to find out more re gender identity based policies in the US would be Scott Newgent, a trans identified female who is currently travelling to various states to lobby to stop legislation based on ‘gender identity’ that is causing medical harm. This person has experience of being taken in by it when they were at a vulnerable time in their life and is doing such good work to try to protect others.

Shocking. Btw, I don’t think Hartland is a medical doctor.

A very good overview of the key issues. Thank you, Rebecca!
Excellent article. Do you know if the Medical Charter is also used in the US?
